More Chia Delights!

So why are Chia Seeds all the rage these days!?

Chia seeds are a concentrated source of MANY nutrients that your body needs!

Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3’s that decrease inflammation in your body and are heart healthy. One serving of chia seeds provides five times more omega-3’s than a serving of salmon. Just two tablespoons of chia seeds provides 5.8 grams omega-3’s; this is comparable to a supplement, but it’s a whole food!

Chia seeds also have more protein and fiber than any other whole grain. Two tablespoons has 6 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber.

Thanks to the fiber in chia seeds they can help with weight loss. Chia seeds absorb 9 times their weight in water forming a gel. When this gel forms in your stomach it can help you feel full for a longer period of time. Chia gel can also slow the absorption of carbohydrates therefore helping to regulate blood sugar.

If you are an endurance athlete, chia gel can also help with hydration. Chia gel can hydrate the body for longer than water can while also providing some protein. Add some honey for an energy boost and some lemon juice for flavor and you have an all natural homemade sports drink known as Chia Fresca!

How do I add chia seeds into my diet?

Chia seeds do not need to be ground before they are used. Their wonderful nutrients can be absorbed from the whole form, unlike flax seeds, that need to be ground for the best nutrient absorption. Chia seeds can be added to just about anything. They have a mild, nutty flavor that will not change the taste of other foods. To top it off they can be stored for long periods of time without going rancid due to their high antioxidant content. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Sprinkle them onto:

  • Cereal
  • Yogurt
  • Salad
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Oatmeal
  • Dips
  • Salsa
  • Pudding
  • PB & J Sandwich

Bake them into:

  • Muffins
  • Cookies
  • Pancakes
  • Bread

Use them to thicken:

  • Juice
  • Soup
  • Smoothies
  • Jam
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Ketchup or Mustard

  1. I need to eat more of these because of the omega 3’s. I don’t eat fish so I know I lack in that department usually.
